SERVICE ANIMALS:

Service Animals in North Carolina Housing

Under North Carolina’s service animal law, people with disabilities who use service animals are entitled to have those animals with them on any premises they lease, rent, or use. A landlord may not require you to pay extra to have a service animal, although you are liable for any damages your service animal causes to the property or to another person.

The federal Fair Housing Act requires housing facilities to allow service dogs and emotional support animals, if necessary for a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy the home. To fall under this provision, you must have a disability and you must have a disability-related need for the animal. In other words, the animal must work, perform tasks or services, or alleviate the emotional effects of your disability in order to qualify. (For more information, see the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s guidance on service animals.)

How close are you to restaurants and grocery shopping?

A wide variety of restaurants are in Maggie Valley and Waynesville area that are reasonable priced and family friendly. The Chamber websites on the Sightseeing Tab and the Restaurant & Shopping Tab of our website provides a list of all restaurants. Our favorites in Maggie Valley are Frankie’s for Italian, JArthur’s for All-American dining, and Guayabitos Mexican restaurant. In Waynesville, we have enjoyed dining at Maggie’s Galley Oyster Bar for seafood for years which used to be in an old cabin by Ingles but now is off the interstate at Sulfur Springs Road. If you are willing to drive along the Parkway, Pisgah Inn offers a nice meal with a beautiful mountain range view but is over an hour half drive.  There are a couple gas station mini-marts in Maggie Valley, but we recommend doing your main shopping at Ingles or Publix in Waynesville.  Be sure if you are grocery shopping at Ingles to get your Ingles card as the saving is worth the effort to obtain the card at the customer service counter.
